Santa Claus Rally? Navigating Year-End Market Movements

As we approach the end of 2024, it's relevant to discuss the "Santa Claus Rally"—a well-known phenomenon where the stock market's tendency to rise during the last five trading days of December and the first two of January. Since 1950, the S&P 500 has averaged a 1.3% gain during this period, with positive returns about 76% of the time.

Election Years & Seasonality

Seasonality and presidential election years often play a key role in shaping market trends. Particularly in the fourth quarter (Q4), seasonality plays an important role due to the combination of psychological, behavioral, and structural factors. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Holiday Spending Boost: Increased consumer spending during the holiday season, including Black Friday and Christmas. This additional spending often fuels optimism in the retail and broader markets.
  • Portfolio Rebalancing: Institutional investors engage in portfolio adjustments to lock in gains, reducing volatility and supporting upward trends.
  • Tax-Loss Harvesting: Investors sell underperforming assets to offset taxable gains, typically completed before year-end, leading to reinvestments in stronger assets.

In presidential election years, November and December often benefit from reduced uncertainty after elections, with markets reacting positively to clarified policy directions and a more predictable environment for businesses and consumers. As outlined in the graph below, the stock market during an election year in November and December has done very well by surpassing the typical two-month interval average by 2.1 percentage points.

This year, the positive trends we’ve observed align with this pattern, giving us optimism that the Santa Claus Rally may continue its momentum. While trends like the Santa Claus Rally can provide valuable insights, they’re just one part of the bigger picture and the thought process that goes into our carefully crafted investment process.
