New Social Security Login Process

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has created a new login portal this year for users to access their online information.

If you have an SSA account that was established before September 18, 2021, you will have to transition to a login.gov account to access your "My Social Security" account information and other services. It is free to create an account.

The purpose of the change is to enhance security, which includes two-step authentication. Additionally, SSA previously stated that they hope the change will help enhance the customer experience by reducing wait times on the phones and by providing more online services.

Even if you're not currently collecting Social Security benefits, it's a good best practice to create a "My Social Security" account for the following reasons:

  • Estimate future benefits: You can use your account to view estimated benefits in different retirement scenarios. This can help you plan for retirement by seeing how different scenarios could affect your future.
  • Review Social Security statement: Your account provides visibility into your Social Security Statement, which includes your earnings history and retirement benefit estimates.
  • Request replacement cards: Should you lose your card, you can request a replacement Social Security card or Medicare card through your account.
  • Change address or direct deposit: You can use your account to change your address or direct deposit information.
  • Check application status: You can monitor the status of your Social Security application through your account.
  • Verify earnings: You can verify your reported earnings in your account.
  • Get a Social Security 1099 form: You can use your account to obtain a Social Security 1099 form.
  • Opt out of mail notices: Preferences and settings can be adjusted in your account to opt out of paper.
